Aim to build a better future together:

Meeting His Holiness Pope Francis

Veerayatan UK was honoured and privileged to be represented by Nilesh Kothari (SCVP Committee Chair and Trustee) and Rajeev Shah (long standing SCVP teacher) as part of an international Jain delegation organised by the Institute of Jainology to the Vatican. The 3-day event focused on an inter-religious dialogue with the central theme on how Christians and Jains can build a better future by embracing diversity and inclusivity, and through caring for the earth, poor and the most vulnerable. Humbling and inspiring opportunity to have had the privilege of meeting His Holiness Pope Francis during a historic and unprecedented private audience in the Vatican which is generally accorded to Heads of State and world leaders.

His Holiness, in his address to the delegation, impressed upon three areas for all of us to always keep in our minds - social friendship, solidarity, and peace. He thanked everyone for their commitment and common desire to work together for a better world especially considering modern-day problems grappled by society. He then spent time to individually meet each delegate which was truly humbling, and an unforgettable experience and no doubt will be cherished by everyone present! A key outcome of this engagement will be a joint communiqué outlining a shared vision for action.

Along with academics from both faiths who presented their papers on the topics, our long-standing teacher Rajeev put together an eloquent summary emphasising the profound similarities between Christianity and Jainism. He highlighted how these shared values can inspire mutual dialogue and promote a shared commitment to global peace, diversity, and inclusivity. This led to an engaging and meaningful dialogue between the delegates. Nilesh had the opportunity to add to the debate by focusing everyone’s attention on engaging the youth with a call to action to drive interfaith volunteering activities aligned with Veerayatan’s ethos of compassion in action.

Other highlights of the trip included a special tour of the Vatican museums including the incredible atmosphere of the Sistine Chapel and the amazing history of St Peter’s Basilica along with wonderful hospitality of the Dicastery in providing accommodation, meals and looking after all the delegates.

Sincere gratitude and huge kudos to Mehool Sanghrajka and Institute of Jainology team in leading this wonderful initiative, bringing the International Jain Delegation together (including leaders from UK, US, India and Oman) and making this happen; and the Dicastery at the Vatican for their warm hospitality.
